2K row time calculator (Concept2)
Last updated: April 28, 2026
The 2,000 m Concept2 row is the reference test in CrossFit, HYROX and athletic prep. Your 2K time says a lot about your aerobic conditioning.
The calculator converts your 2K time into 500 m split (the base metric), estimated watts (Concept2 formula), and predictions over the other row distances.

Watts estimated via Concept2 formula: watts ≈ 2.80 / (split_sec / 500)³. Projections via Riegel.
The formulas
- 500 m split: total time ÷ 4 (since 2,000 m = 4 × 500 m).
- Watts (Concept2): watts = 2.80 / (split_sec / 500)³.
- Distance projections: adapted Riegel (T₂ = T₁ × (D₂/D₁)^1.06).
2K benchmarks
- > 8:00: beginner.
- 7:30 to 8:00: recreational.
- 7:00 to 7:30: regularly trained.
- 6:30 to 7:00: confirmed CrossFit / HYROX athlete.
- < 6:30: elite (top regional/national).
Female athletes: add ~30 seconds for equivalent level.
2K race strategy
2K rows in 4 splits of 500 m. Standard strategy:
- 500 m 1: start under target average split (3-5 sec faster). Still fresh.
- 500 m 2-3: target average split (mentally hardest, mid-race).
- 500 m 4: final sprint, 2-3 sec faster than average.
Coach use
On Unbrokn for CrossFit coaches and HYROX, 2K row is a benchmark to program every 6-8 weeks. Track the evolution on the athlete's records page.
FAQ
Why are my watts different from the Concept2 screen?
The calculator shows average watts over the test duration. The Concept2 screen shows instant watts per stroke. On steady 2K, both converge.
Does the 2K test work on other rowers (Hydrow, Echelon)?
Concept2 is the calibrated reference. On other machines, watts can differ significantly (air vs water vs magnetic resistance). To compare, stick to the same machine type.
